2. Fly Fishing on the Poudre River

Rainbow Trout on the Poudre River, Fort Collins

Here in Fort Collins we’re  fortunate to have miles of prime fly fishing water in our backyard.  Beginning in the high country near Cameron pass and winding over 60 miles on its way to Fort Collins, the Poudre River offers plentiful public access and plenty of hungry trout.  If you’re new to fly fishing or just need to pick up a few flies, I recommend starting your day at St Peter’s Fly Shop.  St Petes is located in the heart of Old Town at Remington and Oak.  Here you can rent everything you need for a day on the water ($20 for a rod and reel).  You’ll also get great advice from either Grant or Jin, two of the nicest and most knowledgeable fish junkies in town.  These guys have a knack for simplifying the learning process and getting the new angler excited instead of overwhelmed.

Next step, get on the water!  If you only have an hour or two just run over to Lee Martinez Park, it’s about a 3 minute drive from St Petes and has some nice runs to fish.  Or, if you have a little more time and want some better scenery and solitude, take the 20 minute drive into the Poudre canyon and enjoy the miles of public access.  It’ll take a long lifetime to fish all of the water around this fine town so get after it!
